Linear testing

It’s ideal to integrate ultrasonic testing (UT) into the production process – without extra handling or additional staff. Typically, modern billet production plants feature a linear UT testing station immediately after the casting section, combined with the visual inspection facility. Following removal from the casting pit, the billets are laid down and conveyed to the inspection station. Here, the logs undergo visual inspection for surface faults and straightness. Each log is rotated while the inspector checks the surface. Then it automatically proceeds through the linear UT station. Faulty areas are detected and the resulting data is saved to a database. Next in line, the crop saw cuts defects out of faulty logs while off-cuts go into a scrap container. Any faulty billets with insufficient fault-free lengths travel straight into a scrap magazine.
