Flexible and cost-efficient strip and plate production

Our Steckel mills are characterized by their great flexibility and low conversion costs. They are the cost-efficient solution when rolling stainless steel grades, special alloys as well as carbon grades for a capacity range of up to 1.8 million tons per year. Our Steckel/Plate mills combine Steckel technology and plate rolling to allow the production of plate and hot strip on a single line.

Steckel mill concepts

Single-stand Steckel mill

Single-stand Steckel mills are today mainly used for the production of hot strip of stainless steel and special alloys. As these materials are mostly produced in small batches, the flexibility of the mills is of particular advantage for these applications. Depending on the product spectrum, mill capacity ranges from 100,000 to 600,000 tons per year (without roughing stand).

Twin-stand Steckel mill

A twin-stand Steckel Mill combines Steckel technology and tandem rolling. This mill type gives you the capacity to produce high-quality hot strip on a Steckel mill at production rates of 1 - 1.2 million t per year (without roughing stand) or up to 1.8 million tons per year with roughing mill.

Steckel/Plate mill

Our Steckel/Plate mills produce plate and hot strip in one mill line. It's the plant type that ensures highest flexibility to adjust your production capacities to market demands.
The production of plate and hot strip can be realized either on a single Steckel mill stand or with a combination of a plate mill stand and a Steckel mill stand. SMS group has successfully realized both types of concepts.
