Decarbonization of metals production

Green Metals

Our roadmap towards net-zero metals production

Today, the production and processing of steel, aluminum, copper and other non-ferrous metals contribute to about 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. However, by applying new technologies in metals production and recycling it will be possible to reduce these emissions to net-zero and achieve the reductions needed to limit climate change.

In iron and steel production, the primary stage based on coke making and blast furnaces contributes to more than 80% of greenhouse gas emissions. To this end, SMS group and Paul Wurth have pooled their 300 years of joint expertise in research and development activities with the common aim of continuing to set technological standards in green steel production. With this combination, we are able to supply the complete technology to produce carbon-neutral steel. The approach of combining green hydrogen, direct reduction and electrification of all downstream processes is the key to reducing greenhouse gas emission in iron and steel production to net-zero until 2050.

In existing integrated steel works, we enable the transformation of assets and infrastructure step-by-step – with significant potential to replace carbon-based fuels. This process requires an ongoing reconsidering and reorganization of energy balances and flows. As a full liner, SMS group and Paul Wurth have the integrated solutions to bring about this change.

The fastest way to produce green steel is the secondary production route based on the recycling of steel scrap and renewable energy. SMS group has been a pioneer in electric steelmaking and energy-efficient minimill technology.

Hydrogen will also play a major role in the replacement of carbon-based processes in the production and processing of aluminum, copper and other non-ferrous metals.
