Steel Dynamics Inc. A new dimension

In May 2021, the new flat steel complex of Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) will start operation – less than two years after contract signing. In Sinton, Texas (USA), SDI will produce 2.7 million metric tons of high-quality flat steel per year and the town will become the gateway of SDI for the markets of South-Western USA and Mexico.

But how does such a big project come into reality? The answer is: team work. Both within the SMS group as well as with suppliers and of course with the customer: SDI. Stay with us and follow the project from ground-breaking to the development of the site, the equipment design and manufacturing, the delivery to the US, the commissioning phase to the start of production.

Plant technology

With an annual capacity of 2.7 million ton (3 million short tons) of steel the plant's productivity is setting new standards. SDI intends to sell the products in the rapidly expanding markets of high-strength steel tubes, multi-phase steels for vehicle construction and structural steels for various applications.

Steelmaking

The steelworks will be equipped with two direct-current electric arc furnaces (DC-EAF) having a capacity of 190 tons (210 short tons) each and two twin ladle furnaces (LF) and a double vacuum tank degasser (VD). It has an annual capacity of liquid steel of over three million tons.

New dimensions

  • 190 tons: Ladle size of each of the two Electric Arc Furnaces
  • 2 twin ladle furnaces
  • 45 minutes: Minimum tap to tap time to provide a ladle with liquid steel

CSP® technology

The CSP® plant will enable SDI to produce thin slabs with thicknesses of up to 130 millimeters (5.2") and slab widths of up to 2,134 millimeters (84"). The CSP® continuous caster is designed as a single-strand curved mold plant (VLB – Vertical Liquid Bending).

New dimensions

  • 7.5 tons per minute: Caster throughput
  • 130 mm: Thin slab thickness
  • 2,134 mm: Maximum thin slab width
  • 2.7 million tons: Annual hot strip capacity
  • 25.4 mm: Maximum thickness of API hot strip grades

Cold rolling

Following the CSP® plant, a five-stand pickling line/tandem cold mill will be arranged. To meet future demands, the process section of the pickling line/tandem cold mill (PL/TCM) will be equipped with SMS group‘s latest turbulence technology and a 600 kN leveling unit.

New dimensions

  • 1 million tons: Maximum pickling capacity per year.
  • 1,981 mm: Maximum strip width
  • 0.20 mm: Minimum cold strip thickness

Strip processing

For cold and hot strip galvanizing, the plant will be equipped with a continuous galvanizing line including a horizontal Drever furnace heated by a direct-fired and a radiant-tube zone. The line will be prepared for the later installation of an ultra-fast gas cooling section to allow for future production of high-strength steel.

New dimensions

  • 500,000 tons: Annual capacity of the galvanizing line
  • 4.0 mm: Maximum strip thickness for 1,930 mm width

Electrics and automation

For the complete technological part of the new plant complex, the X-Pact® electrical and automation systems included in the supply scope are an important factor. They assure that productivity, production flexibility and quality of the final products will meet actual and future requirements.

The applied concept and equipment provide a solid foundation for the digitalization of the plants and processes and for future-oriented extensions and applications. Diagnosis and visualization concepts will be used in the entire plant. They assure and sustain effective and preventive maintenance activities.

The project is well underway

Representatives of Steel Dynamics Inc. came to Germany to discuss details of the recently signed contract with SMS group and visited SMS group’s locations in Germany.

Shortly after the contracts for the mega project in Texas had been signed, a high-ranking delegation of Steel Dynamics Inc. visited the SMS group locations in Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach and Hilchenbach. The delegation stayed several days at each location to discuss details of the project.
