Advanced pelletizing and sintering technology

TATA’s Kalinganagar steel plant just marked a decade of successful operations, and we’re proud to have played a key role in its journey. Our delivery of advanced pelletizing and sintering technology helped establish this facility as a benchmark for innovation and performance.

The sinter plant at Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar site was designed and executed under a lump-sum turnkey EPC contract in cooperation with our local partner and commissioned in 2009. The plant has an annual gross production capacity of up to 6 million tons and is based on a sinter machine with a width of 4 meters and a reaction area of 496 m². This facility supports the integrated steel production at Kalinganagar, which recently marked its 10th year of operation.

Our collaboration with Tata Steel spans more than seven decades. The partnership began in the 1950s, when we delivered Tata’s first sinter plant for India’s first steel work in Jamshedpur in 1956 – a sinter plant that remains in operation after almost 70 years! Over the years, we have demonstrated unmatched expertise by supplying all iron ore agglomeration plants for Tata, including three additional sinter plants at Jamshedpur with production capacities ranging from 1.8 to 2.9 million tons per year. In 2008, we further showcased our capability by successfully building a large pellet plant within the highly congested Jamshedpur site.

For the Kalinganagar site, our scope extended beyond the sinter plant. In 2015, we also designed and delivered the pellet plant, ensuring comprehensive agglomeration capabilities for Tata’s newest steelmaking hub. These projects reflect a continuous technical partnership that has supported Tata Steel’s growth into one of India’s largest steel producers and a global industry leader.

Both, the KPO sinter plant and the pellet plant combine high-capacity design with robust operational reliability, contributing to the efficiency of the integrated steel plant. Its successful implementation under challenging conditions underscores the long-standing cooperation and technical expertise applied throughout this project.
