Special applications for the aerospace industry

In early 2024, Aubert & Duval has invested in a 60 MN hydraulic closed-die forging press from SMS group to advance its capabilities in producing precise aerospace components at its Pamiers site in France. This project aims to enhance energy efficiency and support decarbonization goals, while enabling the production of high-performance forgings for aerospace, energy and defense sectors.

The new press will replace an older Schloemann model and is equipped with advanced sensor technology.

The new hydraulic closed-die forging press is designed to significantly lower energy consumption compared to previous equipment. This is achieved through the use of a force-transmitting telescopic cylinder driven by frequency-controlled pumps, which can be deactivated when not needed, thus optimizing energy use. The press's ability to operate at three distinct force stages (20, 40, and 60 MN) further enhances energy efficiency by allowing precise control over the forging process. Moreover, the advanced technology incorporated into the press facilitates the production of high-precision forgings, which are crucial for improving the efficiency of turbines.

The press's modular design allows for the integration of an isothermal forging module, enabling Aubert & Duval to manufacture high-performance components using advanced materials like those produced through vacuum powder metallurgy. This capability is crucial for producing aerospace parts with superior strength and precision.

As mentioned above the hydraulic closed-die forging press uses frequency-controlled pumps and operates at three force stages. This precise control reduces unnecessary energy expenditure and supports the production of high-precision forgings.

Furthermore, the press is equipped with extensive sensor technology. This digitalization capability facilitates real-time monitoring and data analysis, enhancing process efficiency and product quality while minimizing waste.

The partnership between SMS group and Aubert & Duval is founded on a long history of collaboration and innovation. This relationship is set to continue with the upcoming installation of a new hydraulic closed-die forging press in 2027, which will replace the Schloemann press that has been in operation since 1932. The new press will seamlessly integrate into the existing infrastructure, enhancing efficiency and productivity.

SMS group has been responsible for several modernizations and the annual maintenance of Aubert & Duval’s forging cylinders of their 13MN radial forging machine for many years. As SMS expands its service business, especially in the field of hydraulic presses, the company is committed to further strengthening and expanding the already successful partnership

This major investment paves the way for Aubert & Duval’s medium and long-term future. In serving our customers, our primary goal is to modernize and drastically improve our industrial performance and capability. Yet to make Aubert & Duval the metallurgy leader in Europe, we need to look even further ahead and anticipate what technical developments are to come: This is also the task of this new instrument. We would like to thank our shareholders who, by making this investment, demonstrate the trust and ambition they have in the company and its teams.
