18-HS mills

Cold Rolling

High productivity in stainless steel manufacturing with 18-HS mills

SMS group developed the CVC® plus 18-HS mill design so you can produce high-strength and stainless steel grades more efficiently. Specifically, in a five-stand tandem cold mill (TCM) in 18-HS design, reductions of up to 70% are possible. Even a second run of hard material is no problem. Integrated in a TCM, our 18-HS gives you the opportunity to establish a full, continuous production route for stainless steel. Using rolling oil, this plant type produces surface finishes that match cold rolled strip produced in 20-high mills.

Concepts

18-HS mill design in continuous production routes

Setting up a continuous rolling mill for stainless steel strip is a costeffective option, especially if you aim for an annual capacity of more than 400,000 tons. Compared with using individual reversing mills for large production volumes, the tandem mill option comes with lower conversion costs and higher yield, plus it needs less manpower and investment.

First in line here is the continuous entry section. It includes these machines: double pay-off reel, crop shear for the strip head end, welder, strip accumulator, and strip cleaning section. Downstream of that, the tandem mill consists of up to five stands in 18-HS design plus a powerful pinch roll unit on the exit side. Also designed for continuous operation, the runout section features a double tension reel.

Efficient production of high-strength and stainless steels

It has been some ten years since SMS group developed the 18-HS mill available in combination with CVC® plus. This design is not only ideal for rolling high strength and stainless steels, but also fully operational in both both reversing mills (RCM) and tandem mills (TCM).

Flexible stainless steel production

Key components of 18-HS roll sets for RCMs are slim laterally supported work rolls. They come in diameters of between 120 and 160 millimeters, depending on the mill stand size. What they have in common is that they are all capable of high reductions. This mill type can roll even AISI 200, 300 and 400-grade unpickled material to produce high-quality finished strip.
