Following extensive modernization by SMS group, thyssenkrupp Steel Europe (TKSE) restarted continuous caster No. 1 at its Duisburg-Beeckerwerth plant in October 2014. The modernized plant enables TKSE to provide particularly the automotive industry with high-quality products for a long time. According to Herbert Eichelkraut, the then CEO, the casting plant makes a significant contribution to the production of high-manganese steel. "We are very satisfied with the performance and reliability of the plant," emphasized Arnd Köfler, then head of crude steel production.
The acceptance in July 2015 documented that the ambitious goals for the conversion were achieved.
On the continuous caster, high-quality basic material for high-strength steel grades such as AHSS (advanced high strength steel: high-strength, unalloyed steel grades), ULC and IF steel grades are cast. The plant is designed for slab widths between 1,000 and 2,150 mm, covering a width range that has been increased by 290 millimeters. The thickness of the slabs remains unchanged at 257 mm; however, the plant was designed and prepared for a slab thickness of 350 mm.
