New casting processes to create innovative steel products: BCT®

Here, in a joint project organized by Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG), TU Clausthal, and SMS group, we developed a near-net-shape plant. Today, Salzgitter uses our innovation to produce high-manganese steel grades.

The BCT® plant was first built on an industrial scale at the SZFG location in Peine. Subsequently, we put it into operation and have continued to improve it together with our partner SZFG.

Salzgitter Flachstahl and SMS group started commissioning the BCT® plant in December 2012. So far, the results have been promising, especially as we have steadily enhanced process reproducibility and plant availability.

One focus was on wear behavior and the service life of caster components such as the casting nozzle, conveyor belt, and moving side dams. Our findings were overwhelmingly positive. The newly developed inertization - from the tundish to the section downstream of the caster - ensures a minimal residual oxygen content before casting. That makes BCT® a truly unique mechanical engineering solution.
