Maghreb Steel

First heat and first slab at Maghreb Steel

There were smiles all round when we successfully commissioned an X-Melt® electric steelmaking plant and an X-Cast® slab caster for Maghreb Steel, Morocco. Othman Benmlih, General Manager of Maghreb Steel, said: "SMS did an excellent job here."

What the complex gives our customer is the capacity to cover the entire product range - from liquid steel to the final product. That will boost Maghreb Steel's business and value-added chain. As part of our unique integrated plant design, the flow of production splits downstream of the caster. The start-ups of the steel plant and the slab caster went without a hitch. This was above all down to our vast experience and efficient preparation work.

Energy-efficient electric steelworks

One highlight of the new electric steel plant is the 120-t Arccess® electric-arc furnace (EAF). It's equipped with high-efficiency burners and SIS injectors. These features ensure extra-low energy consumption. And that translates directly into lower production costs. We engineered the EAF so that our customer has the option of using hot metal as input material in the future. Also included in our supply package were a 120-t ladle furnace, a material handling system for alloying agents, and a gas cleaning system. Not only responsible for the mechanical and hydraulic equipment, we supplied the entire X-Pact electrics and automation - complete with drives, measuring and automation equipment, plus technological process models.

General Manager Othman Benmlih gives us the thumbs-up:

"During the four years of cooperation, relations between us were excellent - both on a human and a technical level. SMS group was our integral systems supplier and performed fantastic work throughout. We'll be teaming up with SMS group again in the future."

Engineered for an annual production of 1 million t of steel, the facilities will supply input stock to the Steckel rolling mill and the heavy-
plate mill. Production will cover low and medium-carbon as well as high-strength low-alloy steels. These materials are destined for the company's own workshop as well as for export.
