This fully automated production sequence starts when the cast logs arrive on the log laydown table. Next, they travel over an accumulator to the inspection station, where they are inspected visually for surface defects and tested ultrasonically (UT) for internal cracks and inclusions. The furnace entry accumulator stores the billets between the inspection section and the continuous homogenizing furnace. To reduce noise and avoid surface damage, the logs are lifted and lowered during transfer rather than rolled. Incidentally, this applies throughout the billet production plant.
The log passes through the continuous homogenizing furnace and cooling station without any operator intervention.
Our extensive, ongoing development work has resulted in substantial improvements in recent years. Included here are:
- A new generation of log supports with special (patented) inlays designed for the log transport system of the furnace. This largely eliminates surface defects.
- A shuttle car replaces earlier rolling tables to remove logs from the furnace. That means no more rolling and impacts!
- More intense hot gas convection and modified air guide channels accelerate the heat transfer rate onto the logs. We even achieved this without increasing the number of ventilators.
HE always prefers a limited number of high-quality, powerful ventilators rather than a “forest of ventilators” on top of the furnace. The new design directly results in overheat temperatures in the heating zone of max. 5 to 10°K above the set homogenizing temperature.
- The higher furnace production rate requires more measuring points, even more accurate temperature control, and refined data processing.
To meet these demands, we improved direct temperature measurement with additional measuring points for higher accuracy.
It’s vital to detect changes to the heating regime at an early stage. Our trend analysis software is an effective tool for this purpose. It makes even tighter quality control possible.
All this means you can change log diameters and homogenizing temperatures extremely reliably and flexibly.
