SMS group helps 100 refugee families at its locations in Hilchenbach and Mönchengladbach

  • In view of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, SMS group has immediately stopped all new business in mechanical and plant engineering in Russia and Belarus
  • All work on current construction sites has already been shut down
  • The maintenance and service business is now limited to safety-critical activities
  • SMS group will shortly take in and care for 100 families from the Ukraine at its locations in Germany

Against the background of the war in Ukraine and the human suffering associated with it, SMS group has ceased its main business activities in Russia and Belarus, with the exception of safety-critical maintenance work. New orders will not be accepted. SMS will also not take part in any tenders, with immediate effect. Our work on eleven construction projects at eight customer sites have already been shut down. All services at customers’ sites are limited to the critical maintenance processes relevant to occupational safety, such as in hot metal operations, in consultation with them.

Burkhard Dahmen, CEO of SMS, said, “We remain deeply shocked and strongly condemn the attack on Ukraine. We continue to hope for a cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomacy. However, as long as an active war is ongoing in Ukraine, our business activities in Russia will be frozen, apart from the aforementioned safety-critical maintenance operations”.

SMS has been active in Russia for over 100 years and employs almost 1,700 people in two offices in Moscow and Chelyabinsk as well as in various service centers at customer locations. SMS has no production sites in Russia.

“We have a long-standing partnership with our customers in Russia. However, in view of the war, our solidarity must rest with the people of Ukraine. We are in as close contact as is feasible with our local employees and their families. Departure from the area is, or has been, organized for foreign colleagues who are still in the crisis zone”, said Burkhard Dahmen.

SMS will shortly be taking in 100 families from the Ukraine at its German locations in Hilchenbach and Mönchengladbach. We will provide them with everything they need, and coordination with the municipalities is ongoing. The companies of the SMS group have started internal fundraisers, which are being matched by the group. In particular, the SMS company in Poland is offering technical support at the border crossings to the Ukraine, as well as in-kind donations and personal aid on site. Employees who want to help are being given every opportunity to do so.
