Kardemir orders bar and wire rod mill
Karabük Demir Celik (Kardemir) from Karabük, Turkey, has placed an order with SMS Meer (www.sms-meer.com), Germany, for the supply of a special bar quality (SBQ) rolling mill for the production of surface-quenched and tempered rebars, straight bars, wire rod and bar in coils. In a first stage the mill has an annual capacity of 700,000 tons, allowing for a capacity increase to 1,400,000 tons per year in a second phase. With the bar and wire rod mill from SMS Meer Kardemir produces cost-effectively even in small batches and, thus, is able to flexibly react to market demands at any time.
The mill comprises a walking-beam reheating furnace with a capacity of 150 tons per hour, 18 modern housingless two-high stands in H/V arrangement, a Precision Sizing Mill (PSM®, shears, cooling lines, cooling bed with finishing facilities, a wire rod line with ten-stand MEERdrive® wire rod block, laying head, LCC®, coil handling equipment and two coil compactors. A coiling line with two coilers and cooling facilities completes the mill.
The heart of the mill is an advanced 3-roll Precision Sizing Mill (PSM®) with hydraulic roll adjustment under load. All finished sizes for bar in coils (20 to 55 millimeters in diameter) and SBQ bars (20 to 100 millimeters in diameter) can thus be cost-effectively produced even in small batches. The PSM® also serves a wire rod ourlet with ten-stand MEERdrive® block for rolling wire rod (5.5 to 25 millimeters in diameter). The mill is designed for a maximum speed of 120 meters per second for wire rod and 16.5 meters per second for bars.
All finished products from the PSM® are coiled on the newly developed coiling plant, which is specially designed for scratch-free handling of finished products. The coiler also ensures an optimum shape, height and density of the coils.
Another core facility is the wire rod finishing block with MEERdrive® technology. Each wire rod stand is driven individually by its own motor. This leads to lower operating costs, less roll stockkeeping and redressing, a flexible pass design and lower energy consumption.
The mill is provided for thermo-mechanical rolling and the scope also includes a CCT® system (Controlled Cooling Technology) developed by SMS Meer. That allows demanded mechanical properties such as tensile strength and toughness, and the microstructure of the finished product to be selectively achieved.
An extension of the plant by the addition of a second furnace, a second roughing and intermediate mill and a second MEERdrive® block has already been taken into consideration in the plant concept.
Commissioning is scheduled for the first quarter of 2015.
