Nacional de Cobre commissions copper saw and casting plant
Nacional de Cobre from Mexico City, Mexico, has successfully commissioned a horizontal brass billet casting plant and a saw for copper alloy slabs supplied by SMS Meer (www.sms-meer.com), Germany. With the new installations, the producer of tubes, strip and sections made from copper and copper alloys is able to increase its product quality and productivity.
The new horizontal caster produces brass extrusion billets from which profiles will then be extruded. The casting plant has a capacity of 40,000 tons per year, with diameters ranging from 150 to 250 millimeters.
SMS Meer’s scope of supply includes the casting plant with molds, take-off device, flying saw, run-out roller table, stacker table and cooling water distribution system, chip exhaust system, plant hydraulics and control engineering.
A flexible copper saw for a large number of alloys
The new saw is used for further processing of vertical discontinuously cast slabs where the leading and tailing ends are cut off after casting. The slabs are hot and cold rolled to produce strip. The special design of the saw allows great flexibility regarding alloys and dimensions
of the slabs: copper, copper-nickel and bronze alloys with maximum slab weights of up to 13 tons and dimensions of up to
6000 x 1070 x 220 millimeters can be processed in the new installation. The scope of supply also includes the run-in and run-out facilities and the depositing tables.
Nacional de Cobre already has several casting machines from SMS Meer in operation.
SMS Siemag AG and SMS Meer GmbH are both companies of SMS group which, under the roof of SMS Holding GmbH, consists of a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry.
