Short-stroke, front-loading extrusion equipment for the Indian market
Varron Auto Kast Limited (VAKL), based in Pune, India, has ordered two extrusion lines from SMS group. VAKL will be supplied one 18-MN and one 10-MN short-stroke, front-loading extrusion press.
The 18-MN press will process seven-inch billets of between 300 and 1,000 mm length, the 10-MN press five-inch billets of between 300 and 600 mm length. The presses will have a combined annual capacity of more than 20,000 tons of aluminum profiles.
Commissioning of the two lines is scheduled to take place in the third quarter of 2016.
In addition to the extrusion presses, SMS group will also supply the complete handling system for both plants, including the billet cutting and preparation area, reheating furnaces, outlet with double puller and flying saw, cooling table, stretchers, final cutting saw, aging oven and die oven.
Outstanding features of the fully automated front-loading press from SMS group are the compact, rigid press frame, short-stroke cylinders, high-precision linear guiding of the container and the extrusion stem, high energy efficiency and integration into the automation of the outlet area.
Energy savings will be primarily gained from the energy-optimized design of the hydraulic drive unit. Whenever a drive is not needed, it will be switched off by a software-controlled system and restarted by soft starters as soon as its power is needed again. Compared to other presses, the SMS front-loading presses achieve energy savings of up to 25 percent.
The new extrusion press lines will enable VAKL to enter the segment of finished aluminum products and set new quality standards with technology from SMS group. The two lines will be the most modern extrusion presses in operation in the Indian market. Being a systems supplier, SMS group will support VAKL in achieving its goal of becoming a producer of high-quality aluminum profiles for the premium segment. SMS group will manufacture both extrusion presses and major parts of the handling systems in India.
The SMS group is a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. Its 14,000 employees generate sales of over EUR 3.3 bn.
