Cold pilger mills: Maintenance meets new technologies

Symposium discusses service strategies and maintenance concepts

Digitalization, predictive maintenance, service strategies, maintenance concepts and modernization were the focal points of the Maintenance Symposium for cold pilger mills, which was held at the end of November 2019 at SMS group in Mönchengladbach.

SMS group routinely creates platforms, on which we and our customers can share ideas and information on current product developments and correspondingly matched services and technologies. Twenty maintenance experts from Europe, China, Russia, and Canada came together at the end of November for a two-day Cold Pilger Mill Maintenance Symposium in Mönchengladbach.

The presentations and discussions focused on the everyday problems maintenance technicians face as well as issues that included: What trends are emerging? What can we do to help improve the performance of existing machinery through modernizations? And how will digitalization influence the way we cooperate in future?

SMS group presented its answers to these questions, including holistic service and maintenance concepts, practical examples of already completed revamps, as well as modernizations and technical innovations. What's more, with papers on the subject of smart maintenance, Genius CM® (Condition Monitoring), and a presentation of SMS digital, SMS group was able to highlight its credentials as a partner for digitalization. Customers were given hands-on experience of navigating through the new eShop service, getting to know the "Digital Classroom", and seeing for themselves what our "Smart Alarm" is capable of.

A special highlight was the tour of our service workshop and the production and assembly bays in Mönchengladbach. This included not only a presentation of repair projects in our service workshop but also a look at chocks from the latest orders for cold pilger mills.

Intensive personal exchanges provide an excellent basis for understanding our customers' wants and needs better, and for developing the solutions required to overcome the challenges of changing market requirements in a sustainable and cost-effective way. It quickly became clear that the range of topics we chose was met with great interest by our customers. Some participants got together for further talks the very next day.
