At the beginning of the year, the world focused on the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in the south eastern part of the country. On January 25, 2019, a dam failure happened at a tailings retention basin located on a mountain. The dam released an enormous mudflow that advanced over parts of the city of Brumadinho below. At least 186 people died as a result of the collapse, numerous are still missing.
The city of Brumadinho is located about 60 kilometers away from Belo Horizonte and hence close to SMS group Metalurgia do Brasil Ltda., which has an office building and operates a service workshop on the outskirts of the megacity. The Brumadinho disaster aroused deep sympathy within SMS group and caused it to spontaneously offer financial support. At the beginning of March, SMS group GmbH handed over a cheque amounting to BRL 43,000 (corresponding to EUR 10,000) to priest José Evaristo from the local parish Nossa Senhora das Dores in Brumadinho. The community will pass on the donation to the surviving dependents of the victims and to people in need.
