Top 10 Pain Points of the Industry – Lack of Standards

5. Lack of Standards

To permanently establish Industry 4.0, the existing isolated solutions have to make way for consistent standards. A fully interconnected “Smart Factory” only works if the collected machine data is exchanged and used. That does not only concern the plant itself but also new emerging value-added networks. But developing new standards in comprehensive committees mostly takes years.
The well-known OSI model for network protocols is to become the model RAMI 4.0 for Industry 4.0. The aim of the “Reference Architectural Model Industrie 4.0” (RAMI) is to build a common understanding of Industry 4.0 among industries like ICT, automation and engineering. This includes different aspects of Industry 4.0: from the vertical communication of plant components to the forming of cross-company horizontal value-added networks. RAMI 4.0 is to simplify the cooperation and communication of different industries to achieve a comprehensive standardization.
Until the RAMI 4.0 model really matures and applicable standards are adopted years can pass by. Consequently, there will be solution-based industrial standards in advance, that are available to companies quicker. These kind of offers often emerge in working groups, whose members have long-term practical experience in specific disciplines. They are more agile and can react faster to develop modern user centric solutions.

CADUNITY is such a solution to digitize the ECAD value chain. At the CADUNITY market place design engineers will be able to purchase or sell data in a defined industrial standard. In the CADUNITY standard, the data fields contents and values as well as the design guidelines for the realization of a mechatronic article base are determined. They serve as a basis for the horizontal integration of the value-adding network between electrical engineering and control cabinet production beyond company boundaries.
The industrial standard refers to the display of circuit diagrams such as basic projects, sheet layout and macros etc. This is especially important for generating circuit diagrams, because circuit diagram generators always run according to fixed rules and structures. CADUNITY is the first user centric solution that has been developed by experienced ECAD design engineers.
