New pickling model for stainless steel ensures optimal strip surface quality and minimal resource consumption
SMS group installs an advanced X-Pact® Pickling Model for the hot-rolled stainless steel strip annealing and pickling line of Outokumpu Stainless USA in Calvert, Alabama.
This state-of-the-art solution will enhance strip surface quality, reduce resource consumption, and optimize production efficiency. Scheduled for commissioning in summer 2025, the system integrates seamlessly with existing automation interfaces and supports sustainable and profitable plant operations.
Building on SMS group’s previous supply of mechanical equipment for this line in 2011, the new pickling model offers advanced capabilities to meet the increasing demands of the stainless steel pickling process.
The X-Pact® Pickling Model ensures optimal strip surface quality by efficiently removing oxide layers and the underlying metal matrix layer with reduced chromium content. It minimizes resource consumption while maintaining high product quality through precise control of process parameters. Key features include automatic discharging for safe operation, temperature control for improved efficiency, and current density regulation to limit power usage. Additionally, the system simplifies handling and allows flexible changes to process materials.
