SMS group has developed a new generation of fire refining furnaces, enabling the transformation of copper scrap into high-quality products such as anode copper, fire-refined high-conductivity (FRHC) copper, and copper granules for foil production. Depending on desired product quality and production capacity, SMS offers tilting refining furnaces (TRF) and elliptical tilting refining furnaces (ERF), which perform melting, refining, and casting in one flexible unit. These furnaces handle various grades of copper scrap and can be integrated with additional equipment like top blown rotary converters (TBRC) for recycling slag and lower-grade scrap.

The TRF and ETRF are designed for smelting and refining different scrap qualities and are optimized primarily for copper scrap recycling. They offer the best flexibility in terms of scrap mix and process control. For process optimization these furnaces can be combined with the SMS group BlueControl process control system.

BRR stems from the widely spread TBR (top blown rotary converter), which is applied in many fields for different kinds of operation and process. While it keeps it´s core competences in the field of slag treatment, aluminum and copper recycling, the narrowed field of application allows a much simpler and compact build-up.
