Automated forging press in lightweight automotive manufacturing
Jiangsu Pacific Precision Forging Company, a manufacturer based in Taizhou, China, has expanded its production capabilities through the commissioning of a fully automated MP 3150 eccentric closed-die forging press from SMS group. While the company has historically focused on steel precision gears and gear-shafts, this new 31.5 MN press enables the large-scale production of aluminum suspension components for the automotive industry.
The MP 3150 is designed to meet the specific requirements of aluminum forming, which requires strict adherence to narrow temperature ranges and specialized material flow. The technical scope of the plant includes:
- Main drive & control: The press utilizes a frequency-controlled main drive and an electrohydraulic clutch-brake system. This combination is designed for precise switching and low maintenance requirements.
- Integrated automation: A servo-electric walking-beam system handles part transport. Each axis of movement is driven by independent servo motors, synchronized with the ram position through continuous sensor monitoring to ensure trouble-free operation.
- Tooling and lubrication: The project includes tools specifically designed for aluminum material flow. Integrated spraying technology provides the necessary cooling and lubrication for the dies.
- Changeover efficiency: To reduce downtime, the system includes a fully automated bolster-changing cart for rapid tool and process changes.
The investment is driven by the global automotive industry's shift toward CO₂ reduction and electromobility. Forged aluminum parts are increasingly utilized in these sectors because they reduce vehicle weight while maintaining high material strength and energy absorption during collisions.
By implementing this technology, Jiangsu Pacific Precision has transitioned into the lightweight automotive market segment. This allows the company to supply high-strength aluminum body structures, suspension parts, and engine components that meet current efficiency and safety standards.
