Efficient, sustainable steel production with EAF technology

SMS group's electric arc furnaces are engineered for cost-effective liquid steel production, emphasizing efficient electricity use through innovative burner and oxygen-injector technology. This design ensures high productivity at low production costs while enhancing safety by minimizing operator presence in hazardous areas. Utilizing recycled scrap metal, natural gas, or hydrogen-based DRI, SMS EAFs significantly lower carbon footprints compared to traditional steelmaking methods. With over 100 years of experience in development, construction, and commissioning, SMS group is a leading supplier of electric arc furnace technology. The portfolio includes a variety of furnace capacities, from 4 to 290 tons, and features both AC and DC EAFs with power ratings up to 300 MVA.

Plant types

  • EDGE

    Technological leadership – powerful results

Among the EAF family, the EDGE furnace stands out for its exceptional flexibility in layout and raw material utilization. It can accommodate a wide range of metallic mixes, including up to 60% hot metal and 100% cold or hot Direct Reduced Iron (DRI). This versatility enables the EDGE furnace to deliver high productivity in a fully automated environment. Additionally, it is surrounded by modular solutions that enhance its operational capabilities. Powered by the latest advancements in electric and hydraulic technologies, the EDGE furnace meets the stringent requirements of modern steel producers focused on sustainability and efficiency, making it a vital component in the transition towards greener steel production practices.

    Benefits

    • Low maintenance due to standardized component groups
    • Modular design
    • Lower production costs
    • Higher productivity
    • Better-quality steel grades
    • Steeper run-up curves
    • Longer running times with less maintenance
  • Allcharge

    Continous charging without preheating

ALLCHARGE is an advanced electric arc furnace engineered for continuous charging of scrap without the need for preheating. This technology effectively addresses current and future environmental standards while maintaining high productivity and safety. By eliminating the preheating process, ALLCHARGE significantly reduces emissions of dioxins, VOCs, and CO, contributing to a cleaner production environment. The flat bath operation further ensures lower NOx emissions and minimizes the impact on the power grid. Additionally, the design decouples the scrap conveyor from off-gas suction, allowing for the efficient charging of 100% Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) from the roof, enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability.

    Benefits

    • Best design to limit dioxins, VOC, and CO emissions
    • Flat bath design for lower NOx emissions
    • Lowest impact on the electrical power grid
    • No roof opening improves internal air quality and saves energy
    • Lower electrode consumption
    • Lower noise level
    • Reduced crane cycles for full automatic furnace operation
    • Smaller gas cleaning plant
    • Increased safety due to limited manned operations
    • Natural gas utilization down to zero
  • SHARC (Shaft arc furnace)

    The cost-effective melting unit

The SHARC represents the pinnacle of efficiency in scrap preheating for electric arc furnaces. Unlike conventional systems that utilize a single asymmetric shaft, the SHARC is equipped with two vertical preheating shafts. This innovative symmetrical design maximizes the entire furnace cross-section for energy transfer, significantly enhancing performance. The integration of DC high-current technology further optimizes the process, allowing for a longer retention time of hot exhaust gases in contact with the scrap. As a result, the SHARC achieves remarkable energy savings of up to 100 kWh/t compared to traditional furnaces, making it a superior choice for modern steel production.

    Benefits

    • Twin-shaft design with high volumes for scrap charging
    • Symmetrical thermal and mechanical load, no local intensive wear on panels and refractories
    • Optimized scrap preheating without scrap over oxidation
    • AURA DC technology enables the best stirring effect in the melt improving the quality of the steel and the temperature control (without bottom plugs)
    • AURA DC technology and soft boring means a limited impact of the furnace on the power network, and flicker is reduced by two or three times compared to conventional furnaces and other shaft furnaces
    • DC bottom electrode pin type, consolidated technology with long campaign > 2,000 heats at cost of only € 0.1/t
  • CONPRO

    The hybrid furnace

SMS group has developed a new primary smelter named CONPRO, responding to the challenges of rising CO2 emission costs and fluctuating prices of charge materials for the BOF converter process. This innovative technology integrates both BOF converter and electric arc furnace (EAF) technologies, providing a highly efficient and flexible energy source combination. CONPRO can operate similarly to a BOF converter, enabling a significant reduction in the use of scrap or other coolants to approximately 15%. Additionally, it features a top lance and side wall lances for effective oxygen introduction. In cases where molten pig iron is unavailable, CONPRO can seamlessly switch to EAF mode within a single shift, with only minor procedural adjustments required.
