Automation milestone at Duferco: First full-TIA beam achieved by SMS

In September 2025, the SMS automation team achieved a landmark with the launch of the first full-TIA beam in the reversing tandem mill area at Duferco Travi e Profilati in Brescia, Italy.

Driven by evolving market requirements and the need for enhanced operational efficiency, the team developed a comprehensive full‑TIA (totally integrated automation) system to replace the legacy ProBAS-APC solution in the reversing tandem mill. The previous system could only be accessed and interpreted by highly trained specialists; the Full‑TIA solution enables all customers to operate more easily and independently. Duferco provided essential on‑site support during commissioning in August 2025, including critical performance testing.

This solution meets modern rolling mill requirements and demonstrates measurable operational improvements average CPU load during normal production was under 60% while maintaining a high‑speed control cycle time, with technological control functions demonstrating strong long‑term stability. Industry‑leading testing accuracy and coordinated commissioning reduced shutdown durations and enabled a quicker return to production.

This success reflects the maturity and reliability of the SMS automation platform in demanding production environments and underscores the collaborative effort across the organization and with partners on-site.

Looking ahead, SMS will continue to refine software performance, incorporate operational feedback and advance the Full-TIA roadmap. Ongoing collaboration with Duferco remains a priority as we scale the solution and pursue further optimization opportunities, reinforcing our commitment to delivering robust, integrated automation for long products production.
