The minimill journey

SMS Insights 2025-01

The introduction of the minimill concept in the late 1960s marked a revolutionary shift in the steel industry, offering a more flexible, efficient, and sustainable alternative to traditional integrated steel mills. Today, we are witnessing the next evolutionary stage of minimill technology.

In this edition of SMS insights, we take a deep dive into all aspects of the minimill concept—from electric steelmaking to integrated casting and rolling. We’ll also introduce the CMT concept, designed to enable more efficient and sustainable production of rebar and wire rod.

What else can you expect? A fresh perspective on the economics behind the green transformation of the steel industry, the story of why we have the world’s largest curved LED screen with multi-user tracking, and a glimpse into challenging projects—from Saarstahl to Jindal Steel.
