A data driven approach for strip width offset reduction

The digital solution (hardware + software) optimizes side trimming by detecting geometric deviations and dynamically adjusting strip positioning relative to the rotary knives. It suggests the required offset for the pickling line/tandem cold mill (PLTCM) to achieve product‑specific strip widths. At the same time, a predictive model determines the optimal width offset and communicates it to the hot strip mill (HSM), minimizing trim losses while ensuring target widths.

Highlights

  • Latest solution

    Left seam = right seam

SMS group's latest solution positions a high-precision optical sensor directly at the side trimmer, ensuring that centering happens exactly where it counts. The result is consistently symmetrical seams. This optimized setup not only improves seam accuracy but also opens the door to reducing strip entry width. By confidently trimming closer to the edge, excess material is eliminated and scrap rates are significantly reduced.

  • Traditional configuration

    Left seam ≠ right seam

In traditional configurations, the CPC sensor is placed near the CPC roll - far upstream from the rotary knife. This often leads to uneven seams, as the strip centering occurs too early in the process, missing the critical point of alignment. However, for an optimal cut, the strip must be perfectly centered at the rotary knife itself. That's where SMS group's innovation comes in.
