In 1901, Eduard Schloemann OHG was founded in Düsseldorf. Just a few years later, the trading company had become a design engineering company, which initially designed control systems for hydraulic presses. Schloemann specialized early on in the construction of presses and rolling mills and in the 1920s became part of the German engineering company MAN.

In the 1950s, Schloemann started to cooperate with Concast in the field of continuous casting and became a leading supplier in this new technology. In 1973, Siemag and Schloemann merged and formed SMS.
