Summary

  • SMS group is to build a new hot blast stove for Třinecké Železárny
  • This project follows on from previous orders and continues an already successful partnership

In May 2022, major steel producer Třinecké Železárny contracted SMS group’s subsidiary Paul Wurth to construct a new hot blast stove (HBS) for feeding blast furnace number 4 at its Třinec site in the Moravian-Silesian Region in the Czech Republic. The new facility boasts a state-of-the-art design, thus ensuring a high level of reliability, long service life, and far lower emissions compared to competing designs.

“We are proud to continue our relationship with Třinecké Železárny – a partnership that has a long history of trust built on the success of a number of previous projects,” said Georges Rassel, CEO of SMS group Region Europe. “We hope to get the project underway quickly and are aiming for the new HBS to be ready halfway through next year.”

Paul Wurth has collaborated with Třinecké Železárny in the past, most recently completing an order to reline blast furnace number 6 in autumn 2021. This included coordination activities with the teams in Germany and locally in the Czech Republic.

“The speed with which we intend to action this work is a reflection of its urgency. The new facilities must be erected in quite a restrictive space, meaning this project will face unique challenges for us to overcome,” said Markus Bierod, Managing Director of Paul Wurth Wiesbaden, the SMS group entity commissioned to execute the order.

This Paul Wurth-designed hot blast stove, featuring an external combustion chamber, represents the latest and best in ironmaking technology. SMSgroup is dedicated to ensuring that its range of solutions are the cleanest, greenest, most versatile and durable available to steel producers around the world.
