Boosting safety and efficiency at CELSA with Condoor®

The steelmaking plant of CELSA Barcelona has reached a new milestone: the successful commissioning of CONDOOR® on EAF #2, marking the second automatic slag door system supplied by SMS group at the site.

The collaboration between CELSA and SMS group began in 2021 with a shared ambition: to enhance energy efficiency, reduce CO2 and NOx emissions, and introduce state-of-the-art automation to the electric arc furnace (EAF) process.

The first Condoor® installation on EAF #1 quickly proved its value. Its performance made the decision to equip EAF #2 with the same advanced solution a natural next step, solidifying a partnership built on trust, results, and forward-thinking.

Condoor®: a game changer for electric steelmaking

Trial results confirmed the benefits: operators no longer need to be present on the platform thanks to fully automated slag-tunnel cleaning. The powerful hydraulic pusher delivers precise control over deslagging timing, making the process faster and safer. The cleaning cycle time is significantly shorter, reducing downtime and improving yield, while the uniform setup across both electric arc furnaces simplifies training, maintenance, and spare parts management.

Supporting CELSA’s sustainability vision

Beyond operational improvements, Condoor® for EAF #2 strengthens CELSA’s commitment to safety and sustainability. By eliminating manual intervention at the slag door and reducing gas and oxygen consumption, the system directly contributes to European Green Deal objectives and aligns with SMS group’s "Lights Out" approach — maximizing automation and minimizing environmental impact.

A success built on teamwork

From Factory Acceptance Tests in Italy to installation in Barcelona, this project reflects outstanding teamwork. SMS group specialists ensured reliable hydraulic and automation systems, while CELSA’s teams adapted furnace structures, water circuits, and hydraulic platforms for seamless integration.

Any minor issues were resolved quickly and collaboratively, keeping the project on schedule. Trial runs demonstrated exceptional performance across multiple heats, confirming that Condoor® for EAF#2 delivers on efficiency, safety, and reliability.

The commissioning of Condoor® 2 represents more than a technical enhancement; it symbolizes CELSA and SMS group’s shared commitment to safer, greener, and more efficient steelmaking.
